Part 2: The Story Continues

“I’m sorry mommy, I love you,” the little girl sniffled, her tiny fingers clutching the phone as her father’s booming laughter echoed through the warm living room. He pulled her into a tight, affectionate hug, wiping tears of mirth from his own eyes.

But on the other end of the line, the gentle voice suddenly dropped to an icy, dead-serious whisper.

“I love you too, baby. Now listen to me very carefully. Do not look at him.”

The little girl froze.

“Smile, nod, and pretend everything is fine,” the voice on the phone commanded, vibrating with quiet panic. “The man holding you is not your father. We just found your real dad. I am pulling into the driveway right now.”

Outside, heavy headlights abruptly swept across the living room curtains.

The man’s laughter stopped instantly. His arms tightened around the little girl—just a fraction too hard, feeling less like a hug and more like a cage.

“Give daddy the phone, sweetie,” he whispered. The gentle warmth in his voice was entirely gone, replaced by a flat, hollow, metallic static.

The little girl looked up, trembling. The man wearing her daddy’s suit wasn’t smiling anymore. His face was perfectly still, and his eyes—usually a bright, warm hazel—had shifted to a piercing, luminescent black.

“Who are you talking to?” he asked, his jaw unhinging just a millimeter too far.

Before she could squeak out a reply, the front door exploded inward in a shower of splintered wood. A woman in heavy tactical gear stepped through the smoke, a suppressed assault rifle leveled directly at the couch.

“Step away from my daughter,” the mother snarled.

The thing on the couch didn’t flinch. It simply turned its pitch-black eyes toward the door, its mouth curling into a terrifying, impossible grin.

“You’re home early, my love.”
