The crowd of two hundred sat paralyzed in the sun-drenched garden. The horrifying reality hung heavy in the silent air: Adrian Ashford had been seconds away from sliding a wedding band onto his biological sister’s finger.
Adrian stumbled backward, knocking over the white floral altar. His face was the color of chalk. “Emma… we’re…” he choked out, staring at the woman he was about to marry.
On the manicured grass, Victoria wept violently, clutching the torn lace of Emma’s dress. “My beautiful girl,” she sobbed, burying her face into Emma’s neck, the silver starfish pendant dangling between them. “The police said you were gone forever. The kidnappers—”
“I know,” Emma cried softly, wrapping her arms tightly around the older woman. “Mother.”
But as Emma’s face vanished over Victoria’s shoulder, safely hidden from the horrified wedding guests, her tears instantly evaporated. Her trembling lips flattened into a cold, deadpan smile.
She leaned in, her lips grazing Victoria’s ear.
“Did you really think I wouldn’t find the offshore bank records?” Emma whispered, her voice a razor blade masquerading as a sigh.
Victoria’s sobbing abruptly hitched. Her entire body went rigid.
“There were no kidnappers, Victoria,” Emma murmured, tightening her embrace into a paralyzing vice grip. “You sold me to the Vale family for three million dollars to cover up your embezzlement, then played the grieving mother to keep Grandfather’s trust fund.”
Victoria tried to pull away, her eyes wide with sudden, suffocating terror, but Emma dug her manicured nails brutally into her mother’s spine, forcing her to maintain the affectionate pose.
“Smile for the guests, *Mom*,” Emma whispered as dozens of smartphones began recording their ‘heartwarming’ reunion. “By tomorrow, I take back the Ashford estate. And when I hand Adrian the DNA test proving he was the black-market orphan you bought a month later to replace me… you get a prison cell.”
