“Frozen? That’s a mistake!” Vanessa shrieked.
She whipped around. The older woman was calmly wiping a single drop of wine from her cheek, completely unbothered by the stain bleeding into her silver dress.
Vanessa’s phone vibrated violently in her hand. The livestream she had set up to publicly humiliate her stepmother was exploding. But the flood of floating emojis weren’t cheering for the bride anymore. They were laughing at her.
Beside her, Jonathan was staring at his own screen, the color entirely draining from his face.
Vanessa dropped her hands from her phone and grabbed Jonathan tightly by his black suit lapels. “Jonathan… what’s happening?” she pleaded, her voice shrill and trembling.
He didn’t answer. He couldn’t even look at her. His eyes were locked in horror on the silver-haired woman.
“Jonathan!” Vanessa screamed.
He slowly peeled her manicured fingers off his jacket. “It’s over, Vanessa.”
The stepmother paused, her voice slicing through the dead-silent ballroom. “Did you really think your father left the estate to *you*? He left it in my care. With one strict morals clause: I only hand over the trust when you prove you aren’t a volatile liability.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened. “You set me up!”
“No,” the older woman smiled softly. “I just offered a test. Your groom administered it.”
Vanessa froze.
Jonathan swallowed hard, turning his phone screen toward her. It displayed a cleared, irrevocable wire transfer. Five million dollars.
“She offered me a fortune to walk away if you snapped before cutting the cake,” Jonathan muttered, stepping away from her. “I didn’t think you’d actually assault her on camera.”
The stepmother turned gracefully toward the massive arched windows. The stunned crowd of guests parted instantly, leaving Vanessa entirely alone in the center of the polished marble floor—a penniless bride, abandoned by her groom, broadcasting her own ruin live to a million viewers.
