I never told my parents that the “paycheck” they were fighting to take was only

: “Owner.”

Part 2

Silence wrapped around the room, thicker than the tension that had previously hung in the air. Dad’s expression shifted from disbelief to anger, then finally to something resembling resignation. I watched the change and felt a strange twist of satisfaction mixed with sadness. This was not the way I had wanted them to find out, but it was necessary.

Mom was the first to speak. Her voice, usually so sure and cutting, was now uncertain, wavering. “What does this mean?” she asked, eyes darting between me and the paper, desperate to piece together the implications of what she was seeing.

“It means,” I replied slowly, “that I’m the owner. I bought a property. With my own earnings. It’s mine, and none of you can touch it.”

Madison’s mouth dropped open. It was rare to see her at a loss for words. “But… how? You never said anything.”

I shrugged. “I didn’t think you’d be interested in anything I had to say unless it involved money for you.”

Lily finally moved, shifting her gaze from her phone to me, her eyes wide. There was something in her expression that looked like admiration, and it gave me a bit of hope. Maybe not everyone in the family was beyond reason.

Dad finally released the paper and it fluttered slightly in the air before landing gently on the table. “You think you’re so clever, don’t you?” he spat, though his voice lacked the earlier conviction.

“No,” I said quietly. “I just wanted something of my own. Something real. I’ve watched you control everything for too long, and I refuse to be a part of it anymore.”

Mom’s face hardened, the uncertainty replaced once more by bitterness. “So, what now? You think you can just walk away from this family? From us?”

I sighed, feeling weary. “I’m not walking away, but I’m setting boundaries. I won’t be your punching bag or Madison’s wallet. I have my own life to live.”

Madison scowled, her previous shock turning into resentment. “So you’re just going to let me fail?”

I met her gaze steadily. “No, Madison. I’m not letting you fail. You’re choosing not to succeed on your own.”

Her eyes narrowed, but she didn’t argue. Perhaps, deep down, she knew it was true.

I stood up, feeling the weight lift slightly from my shoulders. “I think it’s time I go. I’ve said what I needed to.”

As I turned to leave, Lily spoke up softly. “Will you come back?” Her voice was small but hopeful.

I paused, looking at her. “Once things have cooled down, sure. If you need anything, you know how to reach me.”

With that, I walked out, feeling the oppressive air of the dining room give way to the freshness of the outside world. The sky was a deepening blue, and the cool evening breeze felt like freedom against my skin.

I knew this wasn’t the end of the story. There were parts yet unwritten, conversations that needed to be had, and perhaps, a chance for understanding. But that was for another day, another chapter.

For now, I allowed myself to breathe, knowing that I had taken the first step towards something better.
