For two months, Maya scrubbed the estate’s marble floors, completely invisible to the family. But Eleanor watched her.
She noticed the way Maya tilted her head when she listened—an exact mirror of Eleanor’s own father. She noticed Maya’s severe allergy to silver birch pollen, a rare genetic trait the Vances carried.
Finally, Eleanor took a glass Maya had drank from and sent it to a private lab.
The results shattered her reality.
Now, it was the night of the annual Vance Gala. Underneath the blazing crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom, Eleanor stood at the microphone. She wore a shimmering silver gown, heavy diamond earrings catching the artificial light.
The room fell dead silent.
“My empire goes to my true daughter,” Eleanor announced, her voice unwavering.
To her right, Chloe stepped forward, wearing a matching silver dress and a sparkling tiara. She beamed. “Thank you, Mother.”
Eleanor slowly turned her head. Her eyes were absolute ice.
“Not you,” Eleanor said flatly. She pointed past the billionaires and politicians. “Her.”
The crowd parted. Maya stood trembling in her simple, short-sleeved gray uniform with black piping. Her face twisted in pure, agonizing shock. Tears poured down her cheeks as she let out a violent sob, running to the stage and throwing her arms around Eleanor’s neck.
Behind them, Chloe’s face drained of color. “What are you doing?!” she shrieked, her voice cracking in panic. “Who am I?!”
Eleanor pulled a plain brown paper envelope from the podium, wielding it like an executioner’s axe. She glared at Chloe. “A fraud. Here’s the proof.”
The ballroom erupted in gasps. Justice had been served.
But as Eleanor squeezed her long-lost daughter tight, she couldn’t see Maya’s face.
Over Eleanor’s shoulder, Maya’s hysterical tears instantly vanished. Her weeping expression melted to dead, cold calculation. She locked eyes with the hyperventilating Chloe and flashed a wicked, razor-sharp smirk.
The DNA results in that unmarked envelope were flawless. They had to be. Maya had spent three years learning how to hack the Vance family’s private medical server to forge them.
She didn’t share a single drop of Vance blood. But by morning, she would own the world.
