Eleanor reached out, her hands trembling, tears ruining her expensive makeup. “My daughter…” she choked out, waiting for a tearful embrace.
Instead, the bride’s terrified expression dissolved. Her trembling stopped. A slow, chilling smile spread across her face.
She didn’t reach back. She just stared down at the weeping billionaire at her feet.
“Did you really think I’d wear a cheap dress on my wedding day, *Mother*?” Maya’s voice was pure ice.
The crowd gasped. Julian, the groom, froze.
“I paid the designer extra to ensure the lace would tear with a single tug,” Maya said, casually adjusting her ruined bodice. “I knew your legendary temper couldn’t resist making a public scene. I just needed everyone to watch you break first.”
At her signal, a dozen “guests” in the back rows raised their phones and cameras. They weren’t family. They were undercover journalists.
Eleanor’s blood ran cold. “You… you knew?”
“I’ve known since I was twelve,” Maya sneered. “Since the woman who raised me—your former head maid, Maria—made a deathbed confession. She didn’t kidnap me for ransom. She took me because *you* ordered her to get rid of me.”
A deathly silence choked the ballroom.
“I was the illegitimate child that threatened your flawless marriage and your hostile takeover of this company,” Maya’s voice echoed off the crystal chandeliers. “You played the grieving mother for the cameras, but you paid Maria to throw me away.”
Julian stepped away from Eleanor in horror. The golden adopted son suddenly realized he was nothing but a PR prop in a monster’s cover-up.
Maya picked up the jade pendant.
“I didn’t come here to marry your son,” Maya whispered, nodding to the police detectives stepping through the white floral archway. “I came here to take my empire back. Enjoy your new estate, Eleanor. I hear the iron bars are lovely this time of year.”
