Part 2: The Story Continues

“You really thought a cheap shoulder check would distract me?” Maya hissed, her shadow swallowing Chloe’s terrified face.

Maya didn’t throw the final punch. Instead, her hand snapped down, pinning Chloe’s wrist to the turf and prying open her rigidly clenched fist. A small, unmarked vial tumbled into the grass. The banned supplements Chloe had tried to slip into Maya’s dropped duffel bag just seconds ago.

The collective gasp from the surrounding teammates died into a suffocating, heavy silence.

“National scouts are in the stands tomorrow,” Maya sneered, holding the vial up to the dying, golden sunlight. “If I fail the random locker check, you get the starting spot. Sloppy, Chloe. Really sloppy.”

Chloe’s defiant glare cracked. She scrambled backward in the dirt as Maya stood up, brushing the grass off her knees like a queen dismissing a peasant.

“Game over,” Maya announced to the stunned semi-circle of girls.

But the girls didn’t cheer. They didn’t even blink.

Slowly, the team captain stepped over the orange training cones. She didn’t look at Chloe. She stared dead at Maya. “It’s not her game, Maya,” she said softly.

From the deep shadows of the gray athletic building, Coach Miller emerged. He wasn’t blowing his whistle. He wasn’t angry at the fight. He just looked at Maya with cold, calculating disappointment.

“I told you to fake an injury tomorrow,” Coach Miller muttered, crushing the dropped vial under his white cleats. “A full ride to State is on the line, and Chloe’s parents paid a lot of money to ensure she’s the only one on the field to get it.”

Maya’s blood ran cold as the entire team silently stepped forward, tightening the circle around her.

She wasn’t just fighting a jealous teammate. She was fighting a rigged system—and she was completely surrounded.
