As I settled into my seat on the plane, I could feel the weight of the past lifting with each passing moment, replaced by the promise of a new life. Connor and Madison sat beside me, both bubbling with excitement. It wouldn’t be long before we touched down in London, a city neither of them had seen before.
Connor was busy explaining to Madison all the things he had read about London in a book. “They have these big red buses, and the Queen lives in a castle!” he said, eyes wide with wonder. Madison listened, her eyes filled with dreams of fairy tales and adventures.
I leaned back, allowing their chatter to fill my mind, momentarily pushing away thoughts of Bradley and his family. I knew that somewhere in New York, things were unraveling for them. Harrison had promised to handle everything, including the envelope of evidence that Bradley would soon receive. It was a small comfort to know that the truth was out there, waiting to catch up with him.
The flight attendants began the pre-flight announcements, and I instinctively reached for my phone to turn it off. But not before one last message from Harrison popped up: “Everything went as planned. They know.”
I turned off the phone and placed it in my bag. There was no need to dwell on it. Bradley and Tiffany’s world was crashing, but it was no longer my concern. My focus was on Connor and Madison. They were my world now, and I was determined to give them the fresh start they deserved.
The plane began to taxi down the runway, and Madison grabbed my hand. “Mom, are we really going to live near a castle?” she asked, her voice filled with awe.
I smiled, squeezing her hand gently. “Not too far from one,” I assured her. “And maybe, if we’re lucky, we might even see the Queen.”
Connor laughed, and even Madison giggled. For the first time in a long while, I felt truly at peace. The future held uncertainty, but it was also filled with endless possibilities.
As the plane lifted into the sky, I glanced out the window, watching as the city below grew smaller and smaller until it disappeared altogether. I felt the final strands of my old life break away, freeing me to embrace the new one waiting on the other side of the Atlantic.
My mind wandered back to the folder and the turmoil it must be causing. The ultrasound, the doctor’s revelation, Bradley’s shock—all of it played out in my mind like a movie I was no longer part of. It was a reminder that actions have consequences and that truth, no matter how buried, eventually finds its way to the surface.
But there would be time to think about that later. For now, it was time to focus on the journey ahead and the adventures waiting in London.
“Mom, can we visit a park when we get there?” Connor asked, breaking into my thoughts.
“Absolutely,” I replied, pulling my children close. “We have so much to explore.”
As our flight soared higher, taking us toward a new chapter, I felt a renewed sense of hope. We were leaving behind more than just a city; we were leaving behind a life that no longer served us.
