“Colonel Blackwood, sir?” the voice on the other end crackled with authority.
“Yes. Assemble at my house. Target locked,” I said, my voice cold and precise, a stark contrast to the chaos in my heart.
The nurse approached me, gently touching my arm. “Mr. Blackwood, your daughter’s condition is stable. We’re running some tests, but she’ll be alright.”
A wave of relief washed over me, but it was quickly overtaken by the icy resolve pressing against my temples. “Thank you,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper, the soldier within me waging a fierce battle against the father desperate to hold his child.
As I waited, I replayed the afternoon’s events in my head. Sarah’s laughter rang in my ears, her callous disregard for Lily’s wellbeing igniting a fire I hadn’t felt since the battlefield. I knew Sarah had always disliked me, viewing me as an undeserving husband to her sister, but this was a new level of cruelty.
The world outside knew nothing of what I truly did, of the responsibilities I carried, not just to my family but to my country. Sarah’s contemptuous ignorance was an annoyance I had tolerated for years. But endangering Lily crossed an unbreakable line. My patience had reached its limit; Sarah had forced my hand.
At home, a team of men and women, some of the finest operatives in the world, would already be gathering. They’d arrive in civilian vehicles, their presence as unobtrusive as a gentle breeze. To the neighbors, they would be friends or family visiting for a holiday gathering. In reality, they were preparing to execute an operation with the stealth and precision I’d honed through years of covert missions.
For too long, I had let Sarah’s venom drip unchecked into the well of my family. Emily, my beloved wife, was miles away, working under the illusion that peace reigned at home. But peace was a fragile thing, easily shattered by ignorance and malice. It was time to remove the threat with surgical precision.
“Sir, any further instructions?” the voice from Fort Bragg broke my thoughts.
“Maintain discretion. Ensure Lily’s safety. Intercept Sarah upon her return home. Do not engage unless necessary,” I ordered, envisioning the calm, focused faces of my team. Each one knew the stakes; each one understood the rules of engagement.
The nurse returned, smiling kindly. “You can see her now. She’s been asking for her daddy.”
I entered the room, forcing myself to leave the soldier at the door. My heart ached at the sight of Lily, small and frail against the hospital sheets, but her eyes brightened when she saw me.
“Daddy,” she whispered, reaching out with a trembling hand.
I took it, enveloping her tiny fingers in mine. “I’m here, Lily. I’m here.”
As I sat by her side, the resolve hardened within me. The world would never know Colonel Blackwood’s mission that Easter, but my family would learn one unyielding truth: I would protect them, no matter the cost.
