I looked at the screen, confused by what the doctor was saying. Diego crossed his arms, his face a mix of skepticism and anger. Paula stood at his side, wearing a smug expression, ready to savor the moment she had been waiting for.
The doctor pointed to the screen, her voice calm and steady. “Mr. Diego, this is not just one baby. Your wife is carrying twins.”
Diego’s face went from certainty to doubt in a matter of seconds. Paula’s smirk vanished, replaced by a look of shock.
“Twins?” I asked, my own voice trembling with disbelief.
The doctor nodded. “Yes. And based on the measurements and development, these babies were likely conceived right before or after your husband’s procedure. It’s rare but possible for some sperm to remain viable right after a vasectomy.”
I turned to Diego and saw the color drain from his face. Paula stepped back, her hands leaving the supportive grip she had on Diego’s arm.
For the first time, Diego was speechless. His eyes darted from the screen to my face, then back to the doctor, searching for anything that would confirm or deny what he was hearing.
“Are you sure?” Diego finally asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
“Yes, Mr. Diego. I’m certain,” the doctor replied, her tone patient yet firm. “These types of pregnancies, while rare, happen. It’s why follow-up tests are crucial after such procedures.”
I felt a mix of relief and vindication, but also a lingering sadness for everything we had lost. I turned to Diego, hoping for some acknowledgment, some crack in his icy exterior.
He took a deep breath, his posture softening as confusion replaced his anger. Paula, no longer the confident other woman, simply stood there, uncertain of her role in this unexpected scene.
A tense silence hung in the air, broken only by the steady rhythm of my babies’ heartbeats on the monitor. It was a sound of life, a sound of truth that couldn’t be ignored or denied.
Diego finally met my gaze, his eyes no longer filled with accusation but with the beginnings of regret. “Laura,” he started, his voice low and hesitant, “I… I didn’t know.”
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak without breaking down. The truth was out, but the pain of his betrayal lingered, a reminder that trust, once broken, isn’t easily repaired.
Paula shifted uncomfortably, realizing her place in this story was no longer what she thought it was. She muttered something about needing air and quickly exited the room, leaving Diego alone to face the reality of his actions.
The doctor cleared her throat, giving us a moment of privacy. “I’ll give you two a moment,” she said, exiting the room with a gentle smile.
Diego sat down heavily in the chair beside me, his hands clasped together. “I’m sorry,” he finally said, his voice thick with emotion. “I should have listened. I should have trusted you.”
I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of his words. “It’s not just about listening, Diego. It’s about believing in us, in what we built together.”
He nodded, tears gathering in his eyes, and for the first time in weeks, I saw the man I once knew. But I also knew that rebuilding would take time, trust, and understanding, especially with two babies on the way.
As we sat there in silence, the future uncertain but somehow brighter, I realized this was just another chapter in our story. And while this chapter was ending, another was just beginning.
